Final of the Public Speaking Project 2008/2009

Winners of the Final 2009

Cork Mental Health Association is involved in a Public Speaking Project as a means of promoting awareness among young people of the importance of positive mental health and of the cause and effects of mental illness.

The aim of the project is to introduce students to public speaking and reduce negative attitudes and prejudices associated with mental illness.

The Association hosted the Cork Final of the 2008/2009 Public Speaking Project in Silversprings Moran Hotel on the 23nd March 2009 which was attended by Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Michael Ahern.

The topic for the final was entitled "The weakest in our society must not be forgotten in a time of readjustments"

Boherbue Comprehensive School, Mallow, Sacred Heart Secondary School, Clonakilty and Pobalscoil Na Trinoide, Youghal took part in the Final.

The winning team was Boherbue Comprehensive School, Mallow.

The speakers were;

1. Siobhan Dennehy
2. Orla Murphy
3. Julie O Sullivan

Their dedicated teacher Ms. Eileen Lane deserved to be very proud on the night as the three girls delivered passionate and impressive speeches. While Boherbue were deserved winners, it cannot go without saying that the standard on the night was very high, as it was throughout this years competition and well done to all schools, students and teachers who participated.

The prize this year for the winning team was a trip to Rome, a well deserved break after all the hard work they put in.

We will be commencing the Public Speaking Project again in September 2009, if your school is interested then please contact the office on the details below.
